Mythical Creatures

I find it weird that creatures such as dragons were present in many cultures legends all over the world. These legends could be referring to dinosaurs. But how would ancient cultures know about creatures that went extinct millions of years before humans. Did humans find fossils of dinosaurs? Or were dragons based on creatures that humans actually saw alive. Leprechauns were their origins based on little people or early human ancestors that survived long enough for humans to witness.
